About Bisbee Blue Enterprises
Joseph Lewis – My Path to Bisbee
It all began in high school when I started my first company, Quality Tunes. I was a mobile DJ back when mixing vinyl was the only option. From the beginning lighting and sound were important to me and Europe was way ahead of America on this front. All of the best disco lighting came from overseas so I would call England during my morning break using my calling card on the pay phone and have the equipment shipped to me. This became my next business, reselling lighting and sound equipment. Fortunately, communication technology advanced from pay phones to Telex machines. If you’re under 55 reading this, I might as well be writing in hieroglyphics.
A young entrepreneur to be!
Next up, at age 23, I purchased ABC Theatrical on 7th St. in Downtown Phoenix. This was also the first commercial building I purchased and still own today. Over the years I restored the building and had it placed on the National List of Historic Structures. ABC Theatrical, 7th St, Downtown Phoenix. Originally built in 1912 for AJ Bayless Grocery.

My ABC Theatrical days evolved into a new venture in 1985, Spectrum Lighting and Sound. Our company specialized in renting and selling professional audio-visual equipment for everything from tours to a corporate AV event. Not only did we continue to import lighting from Europe, but we also manufactured a “moving” light that was used in the Tempe Improv for 15+ years. At that point, my partner and I bought “Reflectables” which created all sizes of mirror balls. Yes, this was a thing back in the 80’s.
At the age of 25, I chose to step into local politics and in 1992 I won a seat on the Tempe City Council (a record for the youngest person ever elected to the Council). To say I was wet behind the ears is an understatement. Looking back, I have to say that local politics, at that time, was truly a team sport and, because of that, we were able to build the Tempe Town Lake and Arts Theater. The shores of the Tempe Town Lake shoreline now include hundreds of thousands of feet of office space, hotels, condos, and apartments.
A great partner also helps you make life changing decisions in a way that nobody else can. Decision #1 was to leave the sound and lighting business and start my own real estate company, The Real Estate Brokers.
Decision #2 was a “stars being aligned” moment when we discovered Bisbee. I really love this story and if you have read this far then you are in it for the long hall. Melissa wanted a getaway vacation, and I didn’t want to drive very far (no six-hour trip to San Diego), so I printed out our reservation (yes, on paper) to what I thought was a hotel in Globe, AZ. When we got in the car Melissa asked, “where we are going”, to which I replied, “a cute place in Globe”. She then looked at the printout and said “Joseph, this hotel is not in Globe, but three hours the opposite direction in a place called Bisbee”. My reply, “well, Melissa then we are going to Bisbee!” On a side note, I am a fifth generation Phoenician and am somewhat embarrassed that I had never discovered this gem of a town prior to the happy accident. When we drove through the tunnel, I fell head over heels with her.
You see, I have an infatuation with old buildings. To me they are like old souls in that each one has a story to tell. I had developed a townhouse project and owned commercial warehouses, but nothing excites me more than breathing new life into a building that literally has stood the test of time. For Arizona, Bisbee is the mecca of old historic buildings with character and a soul that deserve tender loving care. I am fortunate I didn’t have to look far to find people that felt the same way I do, those committed to bringing new life into the buildings and the tourist experience, which is the lifeblood of Bisbee.
I would be remiss if I did not give the people of Bisbee the credit they deserve in their ability to continuously breath new life into this unique town. Some of the best bumper sticker slogans that come to mind are “Bisbee, Mayberry on Acid” and “The Town of The Misfit Toys”!
I have an amazing team, and we are working on some very exciting projects which you can learn more about throughout this website. What does the next chapter have in store? To be continued.
